Abstract
The educational process today is undergoing a transition. While traditional teaching methods such as lectures and practical tasks still prevail, there is an increasing implementation of interactive methods. Among these, artificial intelligence plays a significant role. Considering the social and economic conditions in Ukraine and worldwide, education is conducted in a blended format. This requires the use of information technology through interactive platforms, media resources, and computer equipment. Today, one of the leaders of digital opportunities is artificial intelligence, which is not only popular among educators, but also among people of different industries and ages, making it a truly inclusive tool for modern education (Chetveryk V.K., 2024).
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the ability of computer systems to imitate human intelligence and develop technologies that can perform tasks which require human intervention (Bowen S.J., Watson C.E., 2024). The primary purpose of AI is to assist humans in various technical processes. However, many people use AI for personal purposes: work, study, etc. As teachers, we can also use AI to prepare more engaging and relatable lessons for students, especially those in 10th grade, typically aged 15 to 16 years. A prominent example of artificial intelligence is ChatGPT, which was launched in November 2022.
The use of artificial intelligence has some advantages:
- Personalisation. While preparing for a lesson, a teacher can select tasks according to students' different levels of knowledge and characteristics so that, in the end, we can improve our results in various skills: reading, writing, listening, and reading.
- Virtual assistant for teachers. With the help of AI, teachers can create individual tasks on various topics according to students' interests in no time.
- Individualisation and collectivisation of work. AI not only supports individual learning but also provides collaboration. Interactive features of AI platforms enable students to work on tasks both independently and in groups at the same time. This collective work helps develop communication skills, including vocabulary, and creates a sense of community in the classroom.
There are many variants of using AI to teach lexical speaking skills. Teenagers in our time better perceive information presented in an interactive format, and AI is the best option here (Bowen S.J., Watson C.E., 2024). There are a lot of online services and mobile apps we can use, for example:
- Duolingo – uses adaptive learning algorithms to personalise lessons, making vocabulary and grammar practice engaging with gamified features.
- Grammarly – an AI-powered tool which improves writing skills, offers grammar, spelling, style suggestions, and explanations and helps users understand mistakes.
- Elsa Speak – focuses on pronunciation with speech recognition technology, giving feedback on spoken English that improves accent and fluency.
- Rosetta Stone – creates immersive language learning experiences, using contextual exercises and voice recognition for pronunciation practice.
- Quizlet – uses AI to help users study vocabulary through flashcards, quizzes, and games that adapt based on progress and performance.
- Busuu – combines AI with social learning, offering personalised feedback from native speakers on writing and speaking exercises.
From our perspective, Busuu is one of the best platforms for enhancing lexical speaking skills, offering English practice within a meaningful context. At first, the platform will assess your English level, and then it will create lesson plans according to your goals, and learning pace. These lessons are created to meet specific needs such as vocabulary expansion, grammar, or speaking practice. We consider a community of native speakers to be a key feature of Busuu. Learners can submit writing and speaking exercises for feedback and corrections from native English speakers, providing a guided and mentored learning experience.
The Busuu platform helps students integrate the knowledge gained in class through interactive lessons that allow them to practice the language in a funny way. This increases motivation and makes learning exciting. In addition, Busuu offers materials relevant to learners' interests, such as articles, podcasts, and videos on different topics and that helps improve the learning process. Interacting with native speakers on the platform also helps to develop communication skills and improve pronunciation.
Using artificial intelligence in English language teaching has several advantages. Among them, we can point out interactivity and the ability to use AI as a tutor who can select tasks according to the student's level, help determine problems, and advise on improving a particular aspect. The adaptability of AI while using the Busuu platform allows students to track their progress, enrich their vocabulary, and immediately put it into practice by acting out various scenarios.
